Gaoteote P. Tofau served in the Army's 75th Ranger Regiment Unit.  The 75th Ranger Regiment is the U.S. Army's premier light infantry unit, with specialized skills that enable them to perform a variety of operations. Their primary mission is to conduct direct action raids in hostile or sensitive environments worldwide, often killing or capturing high-value targets. Besides direct action raids, their other missions include Airfield seizure, special reconnaissance, personnel recovery, clandestine insertion, and site exploitation.[4][5] The Regiment can deploy one Ranger battalion within 18 hours of alert notification.[4]

In 1983 Gaoteote P.Tofau was serving as a Ranger Platoon Sergeant of the Charlie Company of the 2nd Ranger Battalion when they rescued 600 medical students who were in danger on the island of Grenada in Central America.  The operation was called "Urgent Fury."  The order was under President Ronald Reagan.

Gaoteote Palaie Tofau

Gaoteote is a US Army retired Command Sgt. Major with twenty-two years of faithful service. Following his retirement, he returned to American Samoa to care for his elderly father. He worked for Tafuna High School JROTC program, and in 1988 he was bestowed the High Chief title of Gaoteote by his village and family. He initiated the volleyball and cricket village teams as well as the infamous Fuao Fautasi crew. 


In 1998, he began his legislative career by being elected to the House of Representatives. In 2002-2004 he served as the Special Assistant to the Commissioner of Public Safety, before returning to the Legislature for another four years. In 2008, Gaoteote was appointed by the Vaifanua District Council of High Chiefs to represent the County as their Senator. Since then, he has been the Senate President. He is a member and Deacon of the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa Vatia. 


He has six children and fifteen grandchildren and is married to Betty Fritz.

Fai'ivae Iuli A. Godinet

Faiivae was born and raised in Leone, American Samoa to Ignatius Iuli of Leone, Faleniu, and Nu'uuli and Pautonu Molio'o of Utulei and Fagatogo. He is number 9 out of 16 children. He learned early on in life that if he wanted something, he had to work hard to earn it. 


He graduated from Samoana High School in 1971, attended college off-island, and then returned home. He is currently the Chairman of the Diocese of Samoa Pago Pago and Holy Cross Parish Leone Catholic Church. President of Football Federation of Am. Samoa (FFAS) since 2007 to present, Vice President of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and a member of the Standing Committee for FIFA. He has served in the local government on ASTCA's Board for 23 years, the Humanities Council for 14 years, Chairman of the Fofo County Coalition Against Alcohol and Tobacco for 11 years, a member of the Territorial Planning Commission, and the Chair of the ASG Scholarship & Financial Aid Board. He was the late Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin's Chief of Staff and is currently the Senator for the Fofo County. 


He is married to Ilaisa Alo Steffany of Fagasa, Leone, and Falealili. They have 6 children and 14 grandchildren.
